Parts of London can change dramatically depending on which day you visit them. For the majority of the week, Columbia Road is an empty, quiet street, lined on one side with Victorian houses, with most of the shops remaining closed. On Sundays however, and more specifically Sunday mornings, this small east end street becomes a hustling, bustling flower market. The stall owners are without fail big burly men shouting “buy some of my lovely pansies” or trying to sell other flowers and plants, often quite aggressively.
The shops, all of which are independent, sell everything from gardening equipment, art, furniture, antiques and ceramics and you’ll discover small markets and coffee stalls hidden away in courtyards and back streets.
Columbia Road Flower Market can get incredibly busy and crowded, so be aware, and if you’re visiting just before Christmas it can feel particularly festive, as locals go there to pick up their Christmas trees.
