Ok, ok we know we seem a little biased when it comes to Amsterdam clubs Roest & Canvas as we’re always posting about them on Facebook & Twitter! Admitted they get a lot of attention but that’s only because the nutcrackers behind both are always coming up with these highly creative and slightly crazy events and ideas which we love! Think organized water fights, tropical parties in the middle of winter or installing a massive pool in their giant warehouse to go with a Bay Watch themed night.. We’re all up for their weird & wonderful-ness which is why we were a little upset to hear of Canvas being closed for renovations.. Boo I hear you cry! But don't worry - we are stoked to announce their new enterprise Doka which we've classed as equally cool as Canvas albeit a tad more raw and raucous..
Newly opened Doka will be taking care of all your clubby needs while Canvas remains hidden behind scaffolding and is frequented by dudes in hard hats instead of cocktail swilling, after dark Amsterdam. And although Doka's program is as eclectic the contrast between the two clubs couldn't be clearer. Where as Canvas offered heavenly nights high in the clouds on the 7th floor, dark & devilish Doka sits brewing & plotting deep down in the basement...
Experimental Doka is all up for new stuff and happily hosts initiatives from art collectives, performers, DJ’s and other creatives and is open Thursday to Sunday.. On Thursday’s (Nachtkijker) young resident DJ’s deliver a mix of the good stuff.. Deep house/ Brazil, Disco & Funk.. Fridays sees Doka’s own Obscura which focusses on the more obscure & underground sounds.. Saturdays are dedicated to established organizations launching new concepts and Sundays (Doka Royale- our favourite..) function as a second Saturday as they invite you to trade a lazy night on the sofa for cocktails, Russian roulette, live acts and 18+ drawing competitions..
We love Doka’s tables which you can switch on to see some pretty bizarre enlarged photo negatives, the concrete bar, their lamps made out of skate boards and barbie dolls, the airplane seats and we love the quality snacks you can get through a hole in the wall..
We don’t want to give too much away as you should go see for yourselves... what we can say though is that Doka is different.. It’s flamboyant, eccentric and a little freaky as one could only expect from a slightly strange oddball sibling whose curiosity and sense of adventure tends to take her a little over the edge... in a good way.. No time to hang about though if you’re in the big, bad Dam as this petite club is only open for 6 months so grab your chance to party in this club unlike the others.. Although brand spanking new, Club Doka definitely delivers..... while wearing a purple velvet top hat with peacock feathers sticking out from the side.. You’ll see... ;)
