This subterranean Scottish restaurant is a chic getaway from the tourist traps.

A tunnel of dried vines entwined with fairly lights lead you to small, subterranean Monteith's.. Hidden underneath Edinburgh's busiest street and surrounded by tourist-traps and tartan-tat Monteith is surprisingly stylish and (comfortably-) chic.. Contemporary Scottish cuisine (and cocktails!) in a class of their own.. Think lock duart salmon with Hendricks & beetroot cure to start or a main of lemon sole with brown shrimp and caper butter.. For dessert there is a broken chocolate tart with mulled wine granita.. After dinner sink into one of the button back leather chairs for a wee dram from the very-well stocked bar and go: "Aaah"..

Escaping the tourist clogged streets of The Royal Mile is as easy as sneaking down a tiny, lantern-lit alley... Love the cheerful clutter of eclectic pieces of furniture and the stag's head made out of MDF..
